# Billing and trials

> What a trial includes, when the trial email arrives, what an existing organization gets, and what you see when an organization is read-only.

Every organization has a billing state. See [Billing state](/concepts#billing-state) for the terms.

## The trial

A new organization starts a 14-day trial on the Team plan.

## The trial email

Each active owner of an organization in a trial gets one email. The email gives the date the trial ends and a link to the billing page.

A daily job sends the emails at 09:15 UTC. It sends an owner's email on the first run after the organization enters a trial. It does not send a second email to the same owner for the same organization.

The job sends no email in two cases:

* The installation has billing turned off.
* The installation has email turned off. If the trial is still running when you turn email on, the owner gets the email on the next run.

If a send fails, the job tries again on its next run.

## Organizations that existed before billing states

An organization that existed before billing states is moved to a state once. The move depends on the organization's subscription:

| Organization | Result |
| - | - |
| On the Enterprise plan | Stays on Enterprise. It is never read-only. |
| Has a Stripe subscription with no recorded status | Team plan, with the subscription status set to active. |
| On the Team plan with no subscription and no trial end date | Team plan with a 30-day trial. The trial starts when the move runs. |
| Any other organization | Keeps its plan, trial end date and subscription status. |

Owners of an organization in the 30-day trial get the trial email.

## When an organization is read-only

A read-only organization cannot start new work. It can still read and review.

When the gateway refuses new work, `outerlayer work` commands and the runner print two things:

1. The gateway's explanation, for example that the trial ended.
2. The sentence `Open <billing URL> to subscribe.`, with the link to the billing page of the organization.

Open the link and subscribe. New work then starts again.

API callers get a `402` response with the code `billing_read_only`. See the [API reference](/api-reference/introduction#errors).
